Article 16, Lawyers in Danger

Each year, dozens of lawyers around the world are targeted by various powers (civil, military, and rebel)

They are threatened, “criminalized,” physically assaulted, and even killed.  Quite simply, these lawyers are targeted because they defend certain individuals, groups, ideas, or causes.

ASF has set up a support and solidarity program in order to help these dedicated lawyers. The program implements the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, adopted by the United Nations in September 1990.

How to Help?

Our enforcement of the right which protects in order to help “lawyers in danger” has only been possible thanks to the work of volunteer, who are members of ASF’s International Legal Network.

The actions we take are always tailored to a particular context and aim to either prevent attacks or respond to them.  Before we take action any action, we first analyze the particular situation and perform a risk assessment.

Our potential responses fall into these categories:

  • Urgent responses: direct material or financial aid; legal aid; observation of legal proceedings
  • Sustainable responses: reinforcing the operational capacity of lawyers and professional organizations, including through local bar associations; practical training on legal procedures and safeguards; setting up collaborations between regional actors; lobbying and advocacy

You too can help us put together a support team for lawyers in danger by joining the International Legal Network.

All of the actions we take are in strict accordance with legal ethics and are done in coordination with Avocats
