As the year draws to a close, ASF is launching a call for donations to support its action in favour of inclusive and fairer societies.
Throughout the world, defending human rights and fighting injustice is becoming increasingly difficult. The rise of authoritarianism is reducing the space for dialogue with civil society, and human rights are no longer at the top of the political agenda.
Despite this unfavourable context, every day ASF teams work with numerous partners to support vulnerable populations and ensure that their voices are heard and taken into account.
In Uganda, ASF supports local populations so that they can assert their land rights in the context of the development of the extractive industries.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, legal assistance is provided to people detained illegally. Over the years, this work has led to the release of thousands of prisoners who had been deprived of their liberty for no valid reason and who had not had the opportunity to benefit from a lawyer or to appear before a judge. To put an end to these deleterious practices and this unacceptable situation, ASF has taken legal action before the national courts and before regional courts to force the DRC to change its penal policy practices.
In Tunisia, ASF supports associations that defend the rights of LGBTQI+ people by facilitating their access to appropriate legal aid and by carrying out advocacy and awareness-raising activities to influence public policies.
The organisation has also developed the Justice ExPEERience network, which has a secure digital platform where human rights defenders can exchange knowledge and set up collective actions that have an impact.
In all, ASF is active in 9 countries (Belgium, Morocco, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Niger, Uganda, Tanzania and Tunisia).
Wherever we work, activists, lawyers and associations working to promote human rights are subject to increasing hostility, threats and repressive measures. Many of the human rights defenders we work with have been arrested, detained without trial or convicted on state security grounds.
A call for solidarity
In the face of these challenges, your support is crucial. As the year draws to a close, make a donation to enable ASF to continue to work sustainably for more inclusive and equitable societies.
Every contribution, whether a one-off donation or a standing order, makes a difference.
