Like many organisations and public figures, ASF is very concerned about the evolution of the main social networking platforms.
Political instrumentalisation, the promotion of disinformation and hate speech, the abandonment of moderation, etc., are threatening. As an organisation that promotes human rights and democratic values, we cannot remain neutral in the face of this major challenge for civil society and militant forces. What is at stake is our ability to exist and to make our struggles visible. We need to invest in and contribute to the development of new, more ethical alternatives – it’s an almost existential issue for our sector.
The rapid evolution of social networks and the global political landscape present us with an enormous number of challenges. Faced with these, we are trying to adapt and do our best to continue to carry out our mandate.
This is why ASF has decided to withdraw from Twitter and invest in new spaces. Bluesky and Mastodon offer perfectly satisfactory alternatives to Twitter. All that’s missing from these platforms is our commitment.
Alternatives to Meta’s services are also in the pipeline. We hope that these initiatives will live up to their ambitions.
